Introduction to Dance

This course is an introduction to dance composition, history, and performance that focuses on gaining skills in, and knowledge of, various dance techniques and styles. Students learn the fundamentals of composition and choreography and to evaluate performance, both inside and outside of class. Course objectives include artistic perception; the processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills unique to dance; creative expression; creative performing; and participating in dance. Students also study the historical and cultural context of dance, including discussions of aesthetic value and analysis and responses to works of dance. The course includes several research and writing assignments. Students choreograph and perform their own pieces as well as performing in pieces choreographed by the instructor or guest choreographers.
