Visual Arts

Visual arts are an integral part of the middle and high school curricula. In addition to two art studios, visual arts facilities include a kiln, darkroom and printing press for the book arts class.

Middle School

Sixth grade art complements the sixth grade core curriculum’s study of multiple cultures and areas of the world. Students explore the artistic expressions of Africa, Asia, Asia Minor, the Middle East, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. They learn about the symbols and artistic themes present in the visual art, music, and rituals of the indigenous and modernized peoples from countries featured in the geography and social studies courses. Both 2D and 3D art methods are incorporated and a variety of media are used. The two-year Arts Rotation in seventh and eighth grades provides a comprehensive foundation for high school and includes visual arts, theater, and music. Seventh graders take a semester of two-dimensional art and in eighth grade a semester of three-dimensional art. Each section offers an introduction to fundamentals, encourages exploration of the discipline, and provides a basis for self-expression in response to a context of artistic traditions.
